Slowcial

  • Art Heads Emporium 321 Broadway Avenue South Rochester, MN, 55904 United States (map)

WHAT is a “slowcial?”

It’s a peaceful social get together designed to encourage and celebrate analog activities, slowing us down together in good company.” Lucy Kruesel, owner of Diatom Books, wants to offer a slowed down sphere of influence. Drop in for a while or for a little bit.

WHY “analog”?

This is not an organized program; it is a mellow get together for logging off, slowing down, making with our hands in the good company of others. When we’re holding a book or writing a letter or a warm tea cup or sewing on a button we can pay attention to what is right in front of us.

HOW does it work?

Conceptually, this is a musical chairs + choose-your-own-adventure experience, part making-circle, part-craft-aloud. There will be a few stations available, the space is designed to be a parallel-play space for projects, crowd-sourcing, figuring things out together, and focusing on what’s in our hands.

⭐️Examples of analog activities that might fit into this space include: puzzles, calligraphy, drawing, reading, magic tricks, writing, knitting, collage or decoupage.

Snail Mail station will have stationery supplies, stamps, and writing utensils. Snail mail is for lovers! Write your senator, write a long-lost acquaintance, friend, or find a new penpal. There’s nothing like getting and receiving real, live letters.

Repair Guild is a station with notions, repair supplies, and a sewing machine. Bring a garment to mend or enhance - repair can be simple or can get really complicated quickly - I can help you figure out where to start with basic handskills.  If you have a hole, rip, issue that you want to try your hand at fixing, want to discuss options, or pick up some tricks, bring it down. No alterations or zippers. This is a collaborative mending station for learning, no gratis repairs. You can email me ahead of time with specific questions of appropriateness or situations :)

Lucy wrote her M.Ed. thesis on Repair Culture (honestly! nerd!) and has been sewing professionally as an instructor and also as a production seamstress for a long time.

WHEN will this happen?

FIRST SLOWCIAL will be Thursday 3/19 with semi-occasional appearances which will include different pop-up guests.
